While Scotland to you may be all about the unspoilt scenery and peaceful views, there are some incredible sights to see and experience that you may not expect to find here, such as the stunning engineering marvel, the Falkirk Wheel. The Falkirk Wheel is an incredible structure and is the world’s only rotating boat lift. The structure is designed to connect two canals, the Forth & Clyde canal and the Union canal.
The iconic Falkirk Wheel is a fantastic feat of engineering that reconnects the two canals for the first time in over forty years. This allows through traffic between both canals. Furthermore, the Falkirk Wheel now reconnects a coast to coast navigation that came about from the Millennium Link project.
You do not have to have a canal boat to enjoy this feat of engineering. By heading down to the Falkirk Wheel Visitor Centre, you can sit in the café and marvel at the wheel in action. Better yet, you can book a boat trip where the wheel lifts your boat up by 35-metres to reach the Union Canal. The wheel then returns back to the visitor centre. This trip takes 50 minutes and is a fantastic way to experience the Falkirk Wheel in action.
The wheel offers three boat trips a day while the visitor centre features an array of activities to keep everyone entertained. The visitor centre provides plenty of food and drinks in the café, while there are playparks and spaces for dogs on the site too. However, only service dogs are allowed on the boat trips and in the visitor centre. There is ample parking, conveniences and a gift shop on site to ensure every need is catered for.
For those visiting the heart of Scotland, this amazing wheel just 23 miles from Glasgow and Edinburgh is a sight not to be missed.
